Pliny, Andreessen and the grant

a16z announced Pliny in its third Open Source AI Grant cohort on June26,2025. The announcement explicitly describes grants rather than investments. It supplies no individual award amount.

TIME’s August2025 profile reports an unrestricted grant from Marc Andreessen. We have not established whether this describes the same a16z award or a separate personal instrument. The two graph connections are two sourced descriptions, not two sums of money.

The significance is support for research outside the large labs from a major venture-capital network. The open question is what that support makes possible and what obligations, if any, accompany it. The useful next document is the award letter or a donor/recipient explanation of its terms—not a guessed dollar figure.
