Question: Why did he fund FLI, and is an AI-versus-crypto commercial strategy supported?

The evidence supports a historic personal donation, stated existential-risk and decentralization concerns, and later public disagreement over methods. No evidence found in this follow-up establishes that the gift was intended to weaken an investment competitor. Publicly stated motives do not settle private motives.

FLI's June2021 announcement describes a$25m multiyear existential-risk grant program enabled by Buterin/Shiba Inu support. This is a program envelope, not the total gift. CoinDesk's March13 2026 report describes unsolicited SHIB tokens and Buterin's account that FLI realized roughly$500m, far beyond his expected$10–25m. These are attributed retrospective estimates, not independently reconciled liquidation proceeds. Interpretation: the better-supported division concerns who controls AI and how safety is pursued. Crypto interests can overlap with preferred technical infrastructure; that alone does not establish a campaign to suppress AI commercially. A historical donor edge must not be read as current endorsement or instruction.

This supplement matters to article framing: any treatment of Buterin as FLI's major donor should also describe his reported objections. The original pitch, dated gift agreement and decision records would help test his account of strategic divergence. The disagreement does not establish breached restrictions on a gift FLI describes as unconditional.
