Joe Benton

Benton says he has left Anthropic and will soon join METR. His biography places him at the UK Frontier AI Taskforce earlier, then in Anthropic’s Scalable Oversight and Fellows research leadership. The METR appointment is prospective in the page inspected.

Experience and working relationships can travel with a researcher. His career makes him a useful professional bridge to follow; the map keeps former roles and announced destination separate.

The institutional question is what changes when someone moves from internal oversight to external assessment. An internal researcher works within the developer’s management structure; an outside evaluator needs an agreement defining access and disclosure. METR’s published funding and access disclosures make those agreements the useful next record. Benton’s biography establishes his professional route, but does not tell us which systems he will assess, what information he will receive or what he will be permitted to publish.
