An intellectual source connecting institutions, audiences and lawmakers

Eliezer Yudkowsky

Eliezer Yudkowsky is a co-founder, leader and board member of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, and coauthor of If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies. His writing has helped shape the case for international restrictions on advanced AI and supplies arguments used by other campaigners and communicators.

Yudkowsky helped establish the institution now called MIRI and remains listed in its leadership and on its board. Its present management also includes CEO Malo Bourgon and president Nate Soares. With Soares, Yudkowsky wrote If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, bringing their warning about advanced AI to a wider public while MIRI expanded its communications and governance work.

The arguments travel through other organizations. ControlAI promotes the book and cites his writing in guidance about briefing lawmakers. MIRI’s March 2026 newsletter describes Yudkowsky and Soares joining a briefing for Bernie Sanders. These are concrete routes from an intellectual position into an organized campaign and a political audience.

His influence on online communication is also traceable. Rational Animations’ operator described adapting four of his works and inviting him into its production Discord to contribute ideas. The channel has other writers and editors; what matters here is the documented route by which a body of writing becomes polished audiovisual material for a much larger audience.

The enforcement position deserves direct attention. In a March 2023 TIME essay, Yudkowsky called for an indefinite halt to large training runs and willingness to destroy unauthorized datacenters by airstrike despite escalation risk. Later MIRI treaty work sets out an institutional approach with multiple contributors. His role in this network is consequently about more than predicting danger: he helps define what response to that danger should be considered politically acceptable.

From the investigation

The connection

In March 2026, Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares joined other researchers to brief Bernie Sanders about superintelligent AI. Sanders released video of the meeting. MIRI, the organization they help lead, pointed its supporters toward the encounter. A warning had reached a senator's desk, with its authors in the room. MIRI's account

Conviction does not settle permission

Yudkowsky is a keystone in this part of RED THREADS because ideas, institutional resources, advocacy and political access meet around his work. That is a judgment about his connecting roles, not a claim that he secretly runs the whole network.

Policy record: https://time.com/6266923/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough/ is a 2023 authored position advocating international restrictions on large AI training and willingness to enforce them against infrastructure, including military action. It does not establish enacted powers or a policy of executing researchers. The later MIRI treaty is a separate document/version; campaign notes contain its safeguards and operational limitations.

Local scope: the inspected portable Editorial v2 dataset lacks a named Yudkowsky/MIRI entity profile, while local media-surge research contains MIRI treaty analysis. Correctly record this as an integration gap in that snapshot, not as an absence from all research.
