Compulsory public accounting and information route through Ofcom
A section 175 public-statement notice is the Online Safety Act mechanism through which Ofcom requires a provider to publish an account of its response to a specified threat. Related information may also be required under the statutory conditions.
A Secretary of State direction under section 175(3) requires Ofcom to issue the notice to specified providers or providers generally. The notice sets a date for describing steps taken; subsection 5 permits information needed to respond to the threat. Reasons must be published for directions on public-health or safety grounds, with a different position for national security under the cited subsection. No worked direction, named recipient or exercised information demand was acquired.
