Industry actor facing congressional oversight

OpenAI

AI developer from which Casar demanded security-incident information.

An actual exchange, as reported by Casar

Casar’s September 2 release reports OpenAI’s response to August requests and demands further logs and security information. The office considers the response insufficient. Underlying correspondence was not read in this pass; that attribution remains explicit.

From the investigation

How research enters the political argument

Sanders’s September 3 essay cites Ajeya Cotra and Dwarkesh Patel to make the case for a pause. METR identifies Cotra as staff and a coauthor of its August incident investigation; it says OpenAI did not pay for that assessment. The essay footer credits Friends of Bernie Sanders. These are observable steps in communication: research, public interpretation, citation by a politician and distribution. They do not establish that the cited people endorse every proposed penalty, or independently verify the incident described.

Capital reaches the physical economy

The model-company connection is direct. OpenAI's 31 March 2026 financing announcement names a16z among the co-leads of a round containing $122 billion in committed capital. That figure belongs to the whole round. Neither a16z's investment nor its specific governance rights are disclosed.

California’s AI auditor laws are enacted

OpenAI publicly endorsed both bills . This complicates a simple government-versus-labs account: a major developer supports rules for the outside evaluators who could assess it. The text and endorsement establish an institutional design and advocacy position; the next question is how appointments, standards and actual contracts distribute discretion.
