A documented review connection between research and regulator
Mariesa Nicholas
Mariesa Nicholas appears in the December 2024 DFC report as an independent peer reviewer, with an Australian eSafety Commissioner Office affiliation. The report was later cited in eSafety’s own Safety by Design toolkit.
What the acknowledgement tells us
Page 5 of the DFC report records Nicholas’s review participation and affiliation at publication. It supplies no manuscript comments, accepted changes or editorial veto. The later toolkit’s citations therefore cannot be attributed to Nicholas personally from this acknowledgement. Her entry identifies a real research-review contact; the corresponding evidence needed to establish influence on the wording would be review correspondence or a drafting record.
P5 names Mariesa Nicholas, Australian e-Safety Commissioner's Office , among four independent peer reviewers, alongside Hazel Bitaña, Michael Salter and Fabio Senne. This establishes named review participation and contemporaneous institutional affiliation. It does not establish current employment, the substance of her comments, corporate endorsement, or authorship of the toolkit's encryption sentences. The six cover authors remain named authors without allocating particular passages to individuals.
