Public pressure campaign targeting the payment dependencies of game distribution
The July 2025 payment campaign was an open-letter effort organised by Collective Shout asking payment-company leaders to stop processing transactions for targeted game platforms. The letter dated 10 July named Steam and itch.io and was signed by advocates including NCOSE's Haley McNamara, Melinda Tankard Reist and Jon Rouse.
The letter addressed PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, Paysafe and Discover leadership. On 24 July, itch.io attributed processor scrutiny and broad adult-content deindexing to the campaign, explaining the need to protect payment access. Mastercard subsequently denied directly requiring game restrictions. The retained record therefore contains a public demand, signatory support and an affected platform's account of consequences, but not the underlying private notices that would settle who instructed which intermediary to take which action.
