Converts private wealth into sustained research and institutional capacity

Good Ventures

Good Ventures is the foundation created by Cari Tuna and Dustin Moskovitz, the Facebook and Asana co-founder. It turns their wealth into grants across global health, science, animal welfare and risks from advanced AI, with Coefficient Giving serving as its philanthropic adviser.

Founded in 2011, Good Ventures is the philanthropic institution created by Tuna and Moskovitz. Tuna chairs its board; Moskovitz is secretary and treasurer. The third listed board member is Divesh Makan, an ICONIQ Capital partner. This gives the foundation an identifiable governing structure for directing resources drawn from the founders’ wealth.

The scale and range are substantial. Good Ventures says it has distributed more than $6 billion across its causes. Those include global health, science and animal welfare as well as risks from advanced AI. Its current giving information includes technical work at FAR AI and professional training at BlueDot Impact. AI policy therefore sits within a broader philanthropic portfolio, alongside work intended to build technical and professional capacity.

Coefficient Giving, formerly Open Philanthropy, researches causes and supports its giving decisions. That advisory relationship is an important part of the story: identifying promising opportunities and recommending recipients can shape the field before a foundation authorizes an award. The resulting organizations may then use those resources for research, training or other work within their missions.

The investigation found four historical Center for AI Safety awards totaling $12,485,288 from November 2022 to October 2023. The final award was described as an exit grant. The sequence illustrates both substantial support and the possibility of a funding relationship ending. Good Ventures is consequently useful for understanding how a field is financed over time, including changes in which institutions a major donor chooses to support.

From the investigation

Typed edges

Four historical Good Ventures award entries total $12,485,288, but that is an award inventory, not a reconciled received-funding total. Open Philanthropy recommendations and Good Ventures awards must not be double counted.

Story assessment and rival explanations

The historical exit-grant label is discriminating evidence against assuming continuous Good Ventures control. SVCF is a material funding intermediary whose ultimate contributor cannot be read from this row. The FLI connection is real but small in this specific 2023 grant disclosure. No Constellation-to-CAIS funding edge was established; shared ecosystem references and compute acknowledgments are insufficient.

The ProPublica-rendered IRS return for Good Ventures Foundation, EIN46-1008520, TAX YEAR2022, covering1July2022 to30June2023 and submitted15May2024, names JACOB COXON in PartXV3a Paid during the year. Amount USD20,159; purpose Long-Term Future Scholarship Program - Research Scholarship. Exact-name scholarship recipient match is verified in the filing; independent confirmation that this is the researcher has not been acquired. The earlier fiscal-year-endingJune2022 return had no Coxon text match. It is inaccurate to silently treat the TY2022 label as a proved calendar2022 payment date.
