Holds and supplies resources within FLI’s financial structure
Lightcone Foundation is a Nevada charity within the Future of Life Institute’s financial network, with US tax identifier 92-0636259. It holds and transfers substantial resources associated with FLI. It is separate from Lightcone Infrastructure, the organization operating LessWrong and Lighthaven.
Lightcone Foundation appears in FLI’s accounts as a related organization and a major source of grants. It is the quieter institutional side of a highly public debate: a legal charity holding resources, participating in related governance arrangements and transferring value to support another organization’s operations.
FLI’s 2022 tax return records a December transfer of about $162.59 million in cash and public securities to Lightcone Foundation. The 2024 return records a $21.05 million contribution of noncash investments back to FLI. Its 2025 audited statements then report $45,197,838 in Lightcone grants. The dates and forms of these transactions show resources being reorganized and used over several years.
The audit also identifies overlapping board service, while the wider FLI records describe shared administrative arrangements among related bodies. These relationships make the foundation important to understanding the institution’s financial staying power. A public campaign can be much more durable when resources and administrative support are organized beyond the most visible operating nonprofit.
The useful question here is how the holding and grantmaking structure supports FLI’s work and who governs those decisions. FLI's 2025 standalone audit reports US$45,197,838 in grants from Lightcone Foundation . Earlier transfers involving Lightcone Foundation and Future of Life Europe concern assets and organisational allocation; they cannot be added together as annual persuasion expenditure. FLI's 2022 IRS return reports a USD 162,587,667 transfer of cash/public securities to Lightcone Foundation, alongside USD 180,297,079 in cash/financial assets to FLI Europe and USD 25,025,000 cash to Future of Life Foundation. FLI's 2024 return then identifies Lightcone as a USD 21,050,000 contributor. This is 99.590% of FLI's USD 21,136,620 contributions that year (own calculation). The matching USD 21.05m appears in the audited cashflow as noncash investment contributions. Thus the large 2024 contribution is evidence of funding from an affiliated holding/grantmaking entity, not evidence of USD 21m newly raised from an independent outside donor. FLI-alone assets fell after asset transfers; do not call that disappearance or expenditure on persuasion. S1-S3.
