The Future of Life Institute is a nonprofit working on catastrophic risks, especially those associated with advanced AI. Co-founded by Max Tegmark and Jaan Tallinn, it combines research, public advocacy, policy relationships and grants, supported by a substantial financial structure involving related foundations.

Jaan Tallinn is a co-founder and board member. These roles connect the public standing of its advocates with an organization able to commission work, support projects and maintain relationships with policymakers.
Its finances are substantial. FLI’s 2025 audited statements report $45,197,838 in grants from the related Lightcone Foundation. Earlier records describe a $162.59 million asset transfer from FLI to that foundation in December 2022 and a $21.05 million noncash contribution in the opposite direction in 2024. This is a structure for holding and using resources across related organizations, with shared governance and administration visible in the records.
The public-facing work has several routes. FLI participates in policy initiatives and expert discussion, while creators in the investigation have acknowledged its support. The Future Tense creator named FLI, Frame and BlueDot as supporters of work while asserting editorial independence. PauseAI’s theory of change names FLI alongside MIRI and ControlAI as a counterpart in policy and expert-consensus work.
The organization’s own transparency statement also helps locate authority: it distinguishes Tallinn’s board position when discussing donor influence. FLI is therefore worth reading as an institution with resources, officers and particular initiatives, as well as a familiar name attached to warnings. Its ability to keep research, policy and communication operating together is a major part of its significance here.
The September 15 Pro-Human Assembly provides a current example of FLI’s convening role. Its own event pages identify FLI as presenter and place its officers in opening and closing sessions. The programme brings political, labor, faith and creator constituencies into a shared venue. The scheduled coalition announcements must still be checked against what happens, and the programme supplies no speaker-payment terms.

It names MIRI, the Future of Life Institute, and ControlAI as organizations developing policy and expert consensus, while PauseAI builds public and political pressure. Its strategy includes coordinated national pressure, directing politicians toward policy partners, and rapid responses to AI incidents. Its organization rules locate campaign and communications coordination with executive and chapter leadership, with local adaptation. These are explicit organizational intentions, not evidence that donors direct every campaign. The theory of change rejects violence and dishonesty.
