An upstream donor with a recorded strategic disagreement

Vitalik Buterin

An Ethereum co-founder whose 2021 SHIB-token support helped finance Future of Life Institute work.

Background

FLI’s 2021 announcement confirms the support. The announced $25 million grant programme was a programme allocation, not an established total value of Buterin’s gift. FLI describes the gift as unconditional and says it conveyed no decision-making role.

Vitalik Buterin follow-up — 5 September 2026

CoinDesk's March13 2026 report describes unsolicited SHIB tokens and Buterin's account that FLI realized roughly$500m, far beyond his expected$10–25m. These are attributed retrospective estimates, not independently reconciled liquidation proceeds. Its headline's billion-dollar figure covers wider philanthropy, not FLI alone. https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/03/14/vitalik-buterin-recounts-how-shiba-inu-tokens-became-a-usd1-billion-ai-policy-war-chest

Cointelegraph's March13 report, updatedMarch16 with FLI comment, describes Buterin's criticism of a turn toward political/cultural action and his concern about authoritarian, fragile outcomes. Aguirre emphasized shared aims and continuing technical work. The institution and the money

MIRI's contributor acknowledgements, updated April 30, 2026, credit Open Philanthropy with approximately $15.93 million, Vitalik Buterin with $5.41 million, the Survival and Flourishing Fund with $3.37 million and Jaan Tallinn with $1.63 million. The Thiel Foundation appears among past contributors at $1.627 million; the Future of Life Institute is credited with $412,252. These are cumulative institutional support credits, including matching funds leveraged. They are not a September campaign budget, Yudkowsky's income or six receipts for the same political project. The page's “recent” category requires only some qualifying support within five years. MIRI's contributor list

Findings that change the story

The donor association does not by itself establish donor control. FLI describes Vitalik Buterin as by far its largest donor and the 2021 gift as unconditional; it says he has no formal or informal decision role, and makes Jaan Tallinn, a longstanding director, the exception to its donor-influence disclaimer. In March 2026 Buterin publicly criticized the later shift toward cultural/political action. His X post could not be read directly (403), so the roughly USD 500m SHIB liquidation figure and disagreement remain a donor account carried in reporting, not a verified liquidation ledger. Cointelegraph also carries Anthony Aguirre's reply emphasizing shared goals and continuing work on coordination, epistemics and technical safeguards. S8, S15. FLI's contemporaneous June 2021 announcement corroborates Buterin/Shiba Inu support and a USD 25m multiyear grant PROGRAM; that is not the total donation. S9.
