Government, industry and philanthropy meeting around child-protection policy
WeProtect Global Alliance brings governments, technology companies and civil-society organizations together around online child sexual exploitation and abuse. It combines policy access, commissioned research and public campaigning, with a funding history that includes the UK Home Office and Oak Foundation.
WeProtect is an international alliance built around the prevention of online child sexual exploitation and abuse. Its membership brings public authorities, technology businesses and civil-society groups into the same policy forum. The European Commission and the Australian eSafety Commissioner appear in its governance, alongside other institutional participants. This gives the alliance a route into decisions well beyond the reach of an ordinary public campaign.
Its resources have broadened over time. A 2021 UK strategy described the Home Office as its sole financial donor at that point. Oak Foundation's 2023 report subsequently listed a three-year core-support award of $2,368,421. Its organizational structure includes a Dutch foundation and a UK operating company, a policy board that approved the 2024 budget, and executive roles responsible for expenditure and assets. Those are the practical institutions behind the public alliance name.
The work goes beyond convening. WeProtect commissioned European online-harms research to support its legislative case, published consultation material and recorded launching a child-safety campaign with thirteen other organizations. In July 2022 the European Commission briefed its board on a legislative proposal. In June 2024 the Home Office briefed it on five-country work ahead of ministerial meetings. These records show research, government access and advocacy being assembled into a continuing operation.
That combination makes WeProtect one of the most important connecting organizations in this investigation. It can help turn child-protection priorities into shared policy language and distribute those priorities across jurisdictions. Its Secretariat authors particular submissions, while participating governments and companies make their own subsequent decisions.
